The soul of something is its essence. Essence is from Latin meaning “being” from Greek meaning the same, from a Proto Indo European word root meaning “to be”.
The soul is the essence, the be-ing, that bridges the body and the Spirit. The soul being an energetic entity it includes the sum, and the parts, of your thoughts, personality, emotions, feelings and probably more. It is that part of you that is “known”, but can not be grasped, or felt, or even proven, but it is there.
Some may use the identification of “higher self” in describing the soul. Articles, courses and SOW in this classification tend to be intended to help you become more aware of, and communicate with your “higher self”, your soul for continued growth.
The book The Third Music illuminates it with this quote:
“God [Spirit] has so willed it that man must conjoin the personalized forces of self and consciousness [Soul] within his own true existing self [higher self-Soul] with the Power and Omnipresence of God, that he may fulfill that which is destiny for him and this earth – this eternity system of solar light, moon light, planetary light, and soul light."
